Driver booked after sand, not chemicals reach Germany

Chandigarh (CNST): A driver of a transport company in Punjab's Derabassi
industrial town was booked for fraud after some chemical boxes shipped
to Germany from India last month were found to contain sand, police said Sunday. The accused is absconding.
Murtaza, a driver of Akali Transport Company, was booked by Punjab
Police in Derabassi, 25 km from here, following a complaint from
officials of pharmaceuticals company Nectar Lifesciences Ltd.
Company officials were surprised to get a complaint from Germany last month that the consignment of chemicals, comprising 720 boxes, had over 115 boxes containing sand.
The consignment was sent from here in mid-December and reached
Germany last month. The chemical, methanol powder, is used in
pharmaceutical preparations.
"The consignment, worth crores of rupees, was mixed with several
boxes containing sand while being transported from the company's plant
in Derabassi to Mumbai port in a truck," a police officer said.
Investigating Officer Gurdial Singh said that police was trying to arrest the driver.
